Understanding Mesh Size for Herbal Powders

By the AYUSH LIFE ELEMENTS team · Updated 20 Oct 2026

What mesh size means, why it matters for herbal powders, and how to specify it in an RFQ.

Mesh size describes how fine a powder is, based on the sieve it passes through. A higher mesh number refers to a sieve with more openings per unit length, which means smaller openings and a finer powder.

Why mesh size matters

  • Processing: capsule filling, tableting, blending and extraction can each work better with different particle sizes.
  • Mixing: powders of similar particle size tend to blend more evenly.
  • Appearance and texture: finer powders feel smoother and look more uniform.

Not every herb grinds the same way

Fibrous roots, barks and seeds behave differently from leaves or flowers during grinding. Some materials can reach a fine mesh easily, while others need more processing. The achievable range should be confirmed for each specific product.

How to specify mesh size

  • State the mesh number you need and whether it is a minimum pass-through requirement.
  • Mention the purpose (for example, capsule filling or blending) so the supplier understands the requirement.
  • If you have a sieve test method or tolerance, include it.

Confirm with a sample

Where particle size is critical, ask for a sample at the requested mesh before placing a bulk order and check it with your own process.
